Q: Did I read about you guys in Der Spiegel?
A: Yes, that was us! Our thanks to writer Sven Sakowitz for the great story.
Q: How do I watch an FCSP game with the East River Pirates?
A: We get together in Brooklyn pretty much every game day (usually Sundays) at the East River Bar on South 6th Street between Bedford Avenue and Berry Street on the South Side of Williamsburg. We typically gather at 6:30 p.m. and start the game by 7pm. Everyone is welcome and there’s plenty of space to get a good view of the screen.
Q: Is there a cover charge?
A: Nope! Our game events are completely free of charge. Of course, since East River Bar hosts us, it’s customary to patronize the bar and tip the bartender generously. Also, we sometimes collect optional donations to support our official charity, Viva con Agua de Sankt Pauli, and/or our fan friendship with Celtic FC. At any time we are collecting donations, we will provide information on what the money is going to so that you can decide whether you want to be part of it.
Q: Does the subway go to East River Bar? What’s the best route?
A: Yes, the L train to Bedford or the J/M/Z to Marcy will get you pretty close. Or hop in a cab over the Williamsburg Bridge, which is about 2 minutes from the bar on the Brooklyn side. Click here for a map and directions that you can customize from your starting point.
Q: How can I be sure you’re definitely going to be there tonight?
A: If FCSP is playing, we’re usually watching. But we hear you — we like to confirm plans before trekking across town too. You can check for updates on this site and our Facebook and/or Twitter feed to be on the safe side.
Q: Do you watch the games live?
A: No, in order to hold our events at a time that’s convenient for New Yorkers, we watch the games on tape delay. We're now streaming the games from the internet to a new projection screen.
Q: But then don’t you already know the final score?
A: No, we make a point of insulating ourselves from news of the final score for a few hours so that we can enjoy watching the game for ourselves. If you choose to come to an event already knowing the final score, PLEASE KEEP IT TO YOURSELF. Some of us get upset when we have the game spoiled for us and no one wants to hang out with an angry pirate.
Q: Are the games in German or English?
A: The games are mostly called in German.
Q: Does East River Bar serve food?
A: They do now! There's a food truck in the garden. They have a stack of delivery menus behind the bar and you can order in anything you like. We are partial to Döner at the corner of Bedford and N. 7th (and they deliver). Sometimes we all kick in a few bucks and share pizza.
Q: Do the East River Pirates host other events besides games?
A: Yes! On December 6, 2009, we hosted our first-ever benefit for Viva con Agua, The Glass Is Half Full, and raised money for clean drinking water in developing countries. Check out some pictures. We are planning future similar benefit events and we are also in the process of planning events to celebrate our fan friendship with Celtic FC. Stay tuned!
Q: I saw some cool FCSP logo cookies online, where did they come from?
A: One of our own East River Pirates makes these sugar cookies herself entirely from scratch. They taste as good as they look! If you are interested in ordering a batch for your own FCSP event or for the fans back home, let us know.
